Zalando operates in 25 European countries and reaches more than 50 million active customers. In fashion, beauty, and lifestyle, it is Europe's largest marketplace by far. For non-European brands, that represents an enormous opportunity — but the entry requirements are stricter and fundamentally different from what you'd encounter on Amazon or bol.com.

This article explains what Zalando expects from sellers, where non-EU brands typically get stuck, and how to get started without registering a European legal entity.

Two models for selling on Zalando

Zalando offers two ways to sell on the platform:

1. Zalando Partner Program (ZPP)

The Partner Program is similar to the Amazon Marketplace model. As a Partner, you list your own products on Zalando, manage your own pricing, and handle your own fulfillment — or via a Zalando-approved European 3PL. Zalando takes a commission on each sale. This is the most accessible route for non-EU brands.

2. Wholesale / Brand Integration

Under the wholesale model, Zalando buys your products and resells them directly. You gain maximum visibility but lose pricing control and must accept Zalando's margin requirements. This model suits established brands with sufficient volume.

Most non-EU brands start with the Partner Program.

What Zalando requires from non-EU brands

Zalando is more selective than Amazon or bol.com. Without the following in place, you cannot be onboarded:

  • A European legal entity or a Merchant of Record — Zalando requires a valid European VAT number and a legal entity that can be invoiced and held accountable under EU consumer law. A US, Australian, or Asian company registration alone is not sufficient.
  • Product compliance documentation — CE marking where applicable, GPSR-compliant labelling, REACH compliance for relevant product categories. Zalando actively verifies this during onboarding.
  • Professional imagery and brand guidelines — Zalando is a premium environment. Lifestyle photography and a consistent brand identity are requirements, not optional extras.
  • European returns handling — Return rates in fashion can reach 40–50%. You need a functioning returns address in Europe and a process to handle returns within 14 days.

🛍️ Zalando reaches more than 50 million active customers across 25 countries — from Germany and the Netherlands to Poland, Italy, and Sweden. In the fashion category, it is the undisputed European market leader.

The main barrier: the European entity requirement

The requirement for a European legal entity is the biggest obstacle for most non-EU brands. Zalando will not onboard a brand without European legal presence. This is where many non-EU brands get stuck: they want access to Zalando's reach but don't want the cost and complexity of registering a GmbH, BV, or other EU entity.

The solution is a Merchant of Record structure. A MoR acts as the legal seller in Europe on your behalf — providing the European entity, VAT registration, and compliance framework that Zalando requires. You keep full brand control; the MoR handles all European obligations.

Which categories perform best on Zalando?

Zalando started as a fashion marketplace and still dominates in clothing, footwear, and accessories. In recent years it has expanded strongly into:

  • Beauty and personal care (Zalando Beauty)
  • Sports and activewear
  • Home décor and lifestyle
  • Children's clothing and accessories

If your brand operates in one of these categories and you have strong visual brand assets, Zalando is a logical next step. If you sell electronics, pet supplies, or industrial products, Amazon or bol.com will be a better fit.
